Computers and the information they hold are invaluable. Unfortunately, they cannot protect themselves. It is the responsibility of the individual, to both oneself and the computing community, to ensure the security of this technology and information.

Security Conscious

Be Security Conscious is a program of Bridgewater State University to educate all members of the campus community on safe computing practices.

What does it mean to Be Security Conscious?

To be security conscious is to be aware of the potential dangers that arise from unsafe computer use, and the means to minimize them.

What are the potential dangers of unsafe computer use?

Would you give a stranger important personal information such as your social security or credit card number? Would you give a stranger the key to your house, car, or office? Unsafe computer use creates similar risks which puts your digital privacy and security in jeopardy.

There are many applications that require sensitive information to be stored on the computer. This information may include passwords, PIN numbers, confidential documents, private correspondence, and personal information. Other information that may seem unimportant should still be treated as sensitive, such as telephone numbers, home addresses, or email contacts. This information needs to be protected.

If the password to your e-mail account was stolen, the thief could easily send a virus or some other malicious program to your family, friends, or co-workers. Such an attack would place their privacy and security at risk. Being security conscious protects not just yourself, but also those around you.

The contents of your computer, much like your house or car, are important. Keep them secure.
