What is the Bridgewater State College Notebook Requirement?

Bridgewater State College requires all full-time undergraduate students to have notebook computers. This year, the requirement applies to all freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors including all transfer students who are entering BSC.

The college has worked closely with Dell to customize the notebook's configuration for use at BSC and reduce the guesswork on what type of notebook students should purchase. We concluded that the Dell notebook recommended by the MassAdvantage program offers the best value, best technology, best service and pricing for our community. The package includes Dell Complete Care accidental damage protection as well as CompuTrace, a software utility designed to track down stolen notebooks.  In addition, this notebook is configured with specific hardware and software features for use at Bridgewater State College and will fit the needs of students for the duration of their stay here at Bridgewater State College.

  • Notebooks ensure all students have equal access to official BSC communications.

How can I tell if my Dell notebook battery has been recalled?

On August 15, 2006, Dell announced a battery recall for many of their notebook computers. The batteries that have been recalled have a defect that in rare instances has caused them to greatly overheat or burn. To date, there have been are only a few instances of this problem among hundreds of thousands of batteries. To be safe, Dell is recalling and replacing all batteries that may have this defect. Dell's recall list includes three models currently used at BSC and in our student notebook program, the D600, D610, and D620. Only some batteries for each model are affected by this problem. Dell asks that you visit a special web site to learn if the battery in your laptop is affected and, if so, to order a free replacement.

To check if your battery has been recalled:

  1. Remove the battery from your laptop, plug in your laptop using the AC power cord, and connect to the Internet.
  2. Go to the web site www.dellbatteryprogram.com
  3. Following the instructions on the site, check the battery's 5 letter ID to see if it may be affected.
  4. If your number is not listed on the site, your battery is safe.
  5. If your battery's 5 letter code is listed, you will enter the full ID number to check if your battery is subject to recall.
  6. If your battery has been recalled, you will automatically be connected to a replacement order form.

If you have any difficulty completing these steps, our staff in IT Support Services would be happy to assist you. If you are unsure how to remove the battery, you may bring your laptop to the IT Support Services counter on the ground floor of Maxwell Library or the first floor of the Moakley Center for assistance.
