Wireless Network - How it Works

Wireless networking is based on two key components, an access point and a wireless Network Interface Card (NIC). The access point connects to the Bridgewater State College computer network through physical connections located in each building on campus. The wireless NIC is installed into the user's notebook computer. Once activated the connection works as depicted below:



The wireless NIC functions like any standard wired NIC, but uses radio frequencies instead of a cable to provide the network connection. The wireless NIC remains connected to the network by seamlessly switching between different access points as you roam throughout the campus.
