Wireless Network - Frequently Asked Questions

Wireless Network - Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommendations for students who wish to purchase a laptop?
The supported systems web page gives an overview of what is recommend for systems to use here at BSC.

How do I configure my laptop to access the wireless network?
Please select your operating system from the list below for instructions

Do I need to purchase a wireless network card?
To access the wireless network an IEEE 802.11 a/b/g WPA / WPA2 compliant wireless network adapter is required. However most laptops these days come with built-in cards and therefore you won't need to purchace one. If you do need to buy a card, they are available at just about every computer and electronic store.

Do I need to worry about any types of interference that may cause problems with my wireless connection?
Some wireless phones operate near the same radio frequency as the wireless network adapters which can cause interference and lead to a poor wireless connection. Wireless network adapters operating in close proximity may also generate interference and lead to a poor wireless connection.

Is data sent over the wireless network secure?
Users should assume that data transmitted over the wireless network is not secure.

Are areas available where users may charge their laptop batteries?
Any available electrical outlet in public areas can be used to charge a laptop battery. Carrying a spare battery might be useful as well.

May laptop computers be left on all the time?
While there is no real problem with leaving a computer on all the time, there is always a chance that a computer can overheat or lockup after being left on for long periods of time. In the case of laptop computers there is also the issue of draining the battery if the laptop is not plugged into an electrical outlet. We request that when not using your laptop computer, conserve the bandwidth and battery life and turn your computer off.

Who should I contact if the wireless network adapter is installed properly but a connection to the wireless network is not working?
Call the IT Support Center at extension 2555 (508-531-2555 from off-campus) for assistance.

Do students need both a wired and wireless network interface adapter?
No, but it is recommended. In fact, its pretty difficult to find a laptop these days that don't have both a wired and wireless connection. To use the wireless network you will be required to have a wireless network card. For resident students, we recommend you have a wired connection available so you can "plug in" while you are in your room.

Will students need to upgrade their laptops in order to access the wireless network with it?
The only upgrade required for any laptop computer to access the wireless network is the installation of a wireless network adapter. This may require other upgrades (such as memory capacity) depending on the requirements placed on the wireless adapter by the manufacturer.

Why is authentication required to access the wireless network?
The college needs to insure that it is providing service to BSC members only. Authentication is the means by which individuals identify themselves to gain access to network services.

If a user forgets his or her username and password, what should they do?
First visit the BSC Self-Service Password Reset page to try and reset your password yourself. If you still have trouble, visit one of the Laptop Support counters located in the ground floors of Moakley or Maxwell Library.
