Switchboard Policy

This statement represents an outline of General Switchboard procedures, as well as Student Call Policies.   The intent of this outline is to summarize what is acceptable and consistent with the purpose of the Campus phone network, and is not designed to lay out all possible contingencies.

 

Switchboard Location and Hours of Operation


The Switchboard office is Located above the Horace Mann Auditorium foyer.   Hours of manned operation are 8 am to 5 pm Monday thru Friday.   For hours when the office is closed, an automated message is supplied.

Switchboard Operation

The Switchboard operates thru three Meridian consoles, utilizing the college web directory http://www.bridgew.edu/Directory/ as the prime retrieval source.

Switchboard Procedure and User Information

  • Incoming calls are received and transferred to the appropriate extension manually
  • A caller who knows their intended four digit extension may bypass the switchboard and connect to the extension directly by dialing 508-531-XXXX
  • Campus extensions may be located by using the BSC Campus Directory home page web link http://www.bridgew.edu/Directory/
  • When a caller is unsure of the person or Department they wish to be connected with, please provide enough background information so the call may be processed as expeditiously and accurately as possible
  • In order to avoid repeated calls during peak usage times, the caller may be directed to an automated system.   Please leave a voicemail message and the Department or person will return your call
  • Calls originating from the Campus of Bridgewater State College will display 508-531-1000 on caller ID.   These calls can not be tracked back to on campus extensions thru the Switchboard
  • Please specify whether a call to The Campus Police Department is emergency or non-emergency

Switchboard Policy

  • Intra Campus calls may be placed thru the Switchboard
  • No outside Local or Long Distance calls will be placed thru the Switchboard
  • Only on Campus extensions will be furnished by the Switchboard
  • No Personal or Confidential College information will be furnished by the Switchboard

Student Call Policy

In order to provide added security and timely student notification of emergency calls, the Department of Technology Systems and Networking has adopted the following policy:

Upon receiving a call asking for a student’s extension, the Switchboard will give out the extension only, reminding the caller that student extensions may be located on the College Web Directory at http://www.bridgew.edu/Directory/

  • Upon receiving a call where the student’s extension is not listed, but a name is listed in the Web Directory, or a student is a commuter, it will be assumed the student does not want any number to be given out.   Only under emergency situations should a call be directed to Student Affaires to provide this information
  • Under no circumstance will the Switchboard give out the Residence Hall or Apartment of any student
  • ○ Call to be forwarded to Residence Life and Housing under emergency situations only.

    ○ On rare instances calls may be forwarded to the Campus Police Department

    ○ Any call relative to student information or emergency will be forwarded to Student Affairs.

 

  • Email addresses will not be given out by the Switchboard
  • ○ Caller will be directed to the Outlook global access list or the College Web Directory
