Bridgewater State College will be replacing Sophos Antivirus software with Microsoft Forefront Client Security in June 2008.

Do I need to be online for Microsoft FCS to work?

Yes. In order to install and receive updates you need an active Internet connection.

How do you download the FCS Software?

The software will be available for personal computers on the BSC download site https://download.bridgew.edu.

Be sure you uninstall all Sophos components using Control Panel - Add or Remove programs -- before installing Forefront

If you are using a Bridgewater State College notebook you will need to be on-campus, connected to our network to for the system to update your notebook from Sophos to Forefront. When the notebook is back on campus and plugged in to our network the system will automatically update from Sophos to Forefront (this can take some time). Please contact the Call Center at 508 531-2555 for assistance.

What executable will run as part of The Microsoft FCS?

The Microsoft FCS Anti-malware Service is MsMpeng.exe.
The Microsoft FCS State Assessment Service is FcsSas.exe.
The Microsoft FCS UI is MSASCui.exe.
The domain computers will have two additional running executables for MOM agent MOMHost.exe and MOMService.exe

Which operating systems are protected by Microsoft FCS?

Microsoft FCS is designed to protect Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista (x86 and x64). BSC will provide limited support x64 bit platform. Mac OS is not supported.

I have an operational Antivirus solution on my computer, should I upgrade to Microsoft FCS?

No, you do not have to. As long your antivirus is current and if you use the campus wireless network, Cisco Clean will need to recognize it.

Microsoft FCS looks like Windows Defender Application. What's the difference?

Microsoft FCS builds on top of the Defender UI and also provides Anti-Virus capabilities in addition to the Anti-Spyware.

How does Microsoft FCS work on workstations/laptops that are not part of a domain environment?

The functionality on the client is the same. Unmanaged non-domain computers will not report to Forefront Server.

What is the difference of a quick scan and full scan?

A quick scan checks the places on your computer that malware is most likely to reside. A full scan will check all files on your hard disk and all programs currently running.

How do you receive current definitions updates?

Unmanaged computers (student's notebooks and home computers) will receive definition updates directly from Microsoft Update. The domain computers will receive update from our internal server or Microsoft update.

How do I force an update?

Start Internet Explorer Click the menu Tools and select Windows Update.

Agent is unable to obtain the latest update.

Microsoft FCS Agent detected or a virus malware. Please allow it to remove the threat. Double click the X red icon and double click the "Smart Clean" button.
