BSC Security Procedures
Purpose:
The College relies heavily on its electronic data
processing systems to meet its operational and informational needs. It's
essential that these systems are protected from misuse and that both the
computer system and the data they process are operated and maintained in a
secure environment. Security policies and procedures are required by the state's
1974 Family Rights and Privacy Act regarding the privacy of student personal,
academic, and financial data, and also by the State EDP Auditors, who audit
compliance with privacy laws as well as regulations governing security and
protection of State property.
Policies:
-
Access
to, and use of, computing resources are restricted to appropriate users.
College computing resources are to be used only for college business unless
explicitly authorized by Information Services and the Vice President of
Administration and Finance. Any usage of computer resources for other
activities shall constitute grounds for immediate termination of access
privileges.
-
Employees
are given accounts in order to maintain the confidentiality of the
information with which they are entrusted.
-
Employees
are responsible for the security of their accounts. Passwords should not be
shared with anyone. Additionally, user names and passwords should not be
written down or posted where they may be seen by others. If anyone knows
your password they have access to all information - data, programs, text
(including E-mail) from your account.
-
Each
user will automatically be prompted to change their password approximately
every 6 months.
-
All
users should remember to log out from their account. Never leave a terminal
or workstation logged in unattended. You are responsible for ALL activities
that take place from your account.
-
No
hardware or any type of telecommunications device can be connected to any
part of the College's network, computers, or workstations unless authorized
by Information Services.
-
No
software, program or information can be added to or removed from the
administrative system unless authorized by Information Services.
-
Report
any suspected security breach relative to your account by sending an E-mail
message to helpdesk or call Coordinator of User Accounts at 531-1236.
