Student Guide to Information Technology - Student Life

Student Life

Enriching your extracurricular experiences with technology

Whether you will be a full or part-time student, living on campus or commuting, the school's social, extracurricular, and career services activities will be an important part of your educational experience. Find out about the technology tools that facilitate different communities on campus, allowing for communication, personal development, and getting together (in person and virtually).

Accessing computer services

  1. What public access for computing is available to students? Examples include computing labs, cyber cafés, residence hall computers, and wireless access.

100% of  classrooms, open access labs, library, residence halls, and administration buildings on the Bridgewater State College campus have access to both the wired and wireless network.  Students can even work online via the wireless network while enjoying the weather outside on a nice spring day.  BSC has open access computer labs and computer kiosks available in various locations across campus.  We have recently added convenient charging stations for notebook computers in the Moakley Center open access computer lab and the Maxwell support area.  In Maxwell, there are also hardwire internet connections available.  For a list of computer labs and the software available, go to http://it.bridgew.edu/support/complabs.cfm

  2. Does the campus provide institutional email accounts for all students and use email as an official medium of communication?

Email is an official means of communication at Bridgewater State College. All students (full time and part time) can claim a BSC user account. This account enables students to access public computers in any computing lab on campus, utilize their own personal BSC email account, and search the library databases from off campus.  Students are also provided personal web space with their BSC user account to store files online or develop their own web pages.  Registered students just need to Claim a BSC User Account to get started.

  3. Does the campus provide and support electronic space for personal student Web pages?

Every BSC student who claims a BSC User Account receives a Webhost account.  Webhost accounts provide students with electronic storage to host a personal web site or store files online.  Instructions for creating a personal web page and transferring files to or from Webhost are also available.

Connecting with others

  1. Is contact information for students, faculty, and staff readily accessible electronically?

BSC provides access to faculty and staff contact information, including telephone numbers, fax numbers, and email, online through the Campus Directory.  Student can also use the campus directory to search for other student email addresses and student home pages.  If students choose to list other contact information, that information is also available in the directory.  Faculty, staff, and student email addresses are also listed in the web-based email directory.

  2. What social activities and services are available online?

The Current Events page on the BSC web site provides students detailed information about various events across campus.  It includes links to Student Events, Athletic Events, Moakley Center Events, Career Services Events, Theatre & Dance Season, Anderson Gallery Exhibits, and Musical Events.

  3. Are there Web sites for student organizations and clubs?

BSC takes pride in the fact that there are many opportunities to compliment classroom learning, expand personal interests, or explore new horizons. Whatever your interest -- recreational, athletic, social, cultural, or political -- there is a student club on campus or an organization within the community to meet your needs. At Bridgewater you will find a diversity of ideas and concerns represented, and your co-curricular options are endless.  View a list of clubs and organizations with links to the individual club or organization web pages online.

  4. Does the campus make available online discussion forums or bulletin boards for un-moderated use?

BSC provides specific course related online discussion forums to students through Blackboard or Moodle, our course management systems. The College will be incorporating other online discussion forums (bulletin boards, weblogs, etc.) in the near future as part of our student portal implementation.

  5. What technology-supported career-planning services are available to students?

The BSC Career Services department has an extensive online presence that enables students to utilize the services they provide from both on and off campus.  Some of the technology-supported services they provide include electronic resources for career counseling, career exploration, online inventories, online internship database and information, job search resources, career service workshop materials, and alumni resources.
