Desktop Security

Lock computer or log off whenever left unattended.

Even if you plan to be away for only a minute, be sure to lock your computer's desktop. It does not take long for your data to be accessed, and your security to be breached. Take care when leaving your computer unattended.

Under Windows 2000/XP, press the CONTROL and hold it, ALT and hold it, and finally DELETE, then release them. Then press the "lock computer" button, and your machine is now safe as long as only you know the password. This is a very easy, safe way to keep your data secure.

If you can't lock the computer due to running older versions of windows, or you are running a different operating system, then log out completely from the computer. Do not leave yourself logged in and assume nothing will happen, be safe when you leave your computer.

Don't let others use the computer under your account, have them log in.

Even with you standing over their shoulders a user may accidentally delete a file or copy a sensitive file to a public location.

You do not want to risk someone accidentally destroying your information, so make sure you have them log in on their own account. Doing so protects not only your data, but the data of others who might be sharing a drive with you, like a departmental drive.

Not all security breaches are on purpose. While you may trust the person using your computer, curiosity or misunderstanding may result in their accessing sensitive data. By having a user log in on their own account, you prevent any breaches of your own security.

Possibly info here on how to remove permissions on certain files?
