Web Publishing Guidelines

Web Publishing Guidelines

Bridgewater State College Publication Guidelines and World Wide Web Site Policy must be adhered to by departmental/organizational Information Providers for consistency, quality and accuracy. Web authors who develop personal pages must adhere to the section titled Personal Web Pages. Recommended content for faculty and staff personal pages can be found in the section titled Faculty and Staff Web Pages.

Academic Department Pages
The minimal content for academic department pages is a faculty listing and links to the centrally managed catalog version of the department's undergraduate programs, graduate programs, and course offerings.

Copyright
Publishers should comply with copyright and trademark regulations. Graphics, video, audio, or text created by another person may not be placed on a page without demonstrated permission of the author or artist.

Duplication of Information
To ensure accuracy, do not copy material published by other departments; instead, create a link to such documents.

Email Addresses
The email address of the information provider or a generic departmental email address must appear on each page. The information provider is responsible for ensuring that all email is responded to in a timely manner.

Faculty and Staff Web Pages
Recommended information for faculty and staff pages:

  • minimal: office hours, office location, telephone number, fax number and email address
  • optional: links to BSC home page and department lead page, research interests, and publications
    • for faculty: course syllabi, related academic links
    • for staff: job duties, current projects, job related links

Images, logos and layout
Images, logos and layout templates can be found at http://www.bridgew.edu/BrandingToolbox/.

For all images, provide a text description as an alternate for text-only browsers. For example:
< IMG SRC="button.gif" ALT="Click here for more" >

Search Engine Optimization
All pages should have a unique and key word rich <title> tag as well as page titles marked up with the <h1> tag. This will ensure that your page comes up in the search engines.

Language
Web documents are to be created in HTML. Consult Information Services for instructions on the use of HTML.

Page Layouts
All official Bridgewater State College Web pages must adhere to the current branding template. Any deviations from the template, must be approved in advance by the Office of Communications.

Personal Web Pages
The author bears full responsibility for the contents of their personal web page. Authors must adhere to the college's policy on Responsible Use of Information Technology.

An alphabetical listing of all faculty and staff pages will be maintained by Information Technology. Departments may also provide an index page to their own faculty and/or staff. An alphabetical listing of all student pages will be maintained as well.

Unacceptable Material
Personal business, advertising, sexually explicit or inappropriate material does not belong on the Bridgewater State College web site.

Under Construction
Only those pages that are completed should be included on the BSC web site. Indicate the availability date of material in development on your index page. Do not provide links to unfinished pages.
