Read the campus policies related to the web site including Responsible Use of Information Technology, the World Wide Web Site Policy, and Web Publishing Guidelines. Refer back to them as you develop your web pages. You are responsible for compliance with these policies.
If you don't know how to create a basic web document, learn about HTML and HTML editors. Review resources for web developers, check out academic or personal enrichment course offerings, or try getting a good book. You are responsible for developing your own personal web pages.
Personal pages are served from your user account on Webhost. If you are a Bridgewater State College student, your account was automatically created when your email address was activated. Faculty or staff members who don't have an account, may apply for one.
Eagle, the BSC academic machine, also serves web pages. Eagle is used predominantly to support course work. Accounts are distributed to classes per a request by the instructor (see User Accounts).
Note: Web pages will be accessible as long as the account is available.
You should determine how you will create your web page. You can hand-code your pages in HTML or use a WYSIWYG editor. A list of options is available under resources for web developers.
To move files to and from Webhost, follow these instructions.
Ready to go...
Create your web pages. As you are developing them, you can test them using the browser on your PC. Some html editors allow you to preview your pages from the editor. You typically must first go through a simple step to let the editor know which browser to use. Also, you can look at your files directly from your browser using the open file command. For Netscape, this is found under the file menu.
Your initial web page, or your home page, should have the name index.htm or index.html. This is the default file name the web server looks for if a file name is not specified in the URL.
Once you've completed and tested your pages, you are ready to move them to the server so that they are accessible to the world (instructions).
Once your files are moved to Webhost, you can try to access them using your web browser. Enter the following URL into your browser: webhost.bridgew.edu/YourUsername where YourUsername is your Webhost username. If you have moved your home page to Webhost with the name index.htm or index.html, that document should appear in your browser.
To access other files under your web directory, use the URL: webhost.bridgew.edu/YourUsername/filename.ext where filename.ext is the filename followed by the file extension, e.g. hello.htm.
If you are a faculty member, notify the Web Management Team (webteam@bridgew.edu) that your page is ready and can be linked from the listing of Faculty Web Pages.
