Creating Departmental/Organizational Web Pages
Creating Departmental/Organizational Web Pages
Preparation
- Discuss the information that you want to provide on the web site within your department/organization.
Your department head must discuss the department's web plans with his/her Vice President.
- Contact Web Team with any concerns or
questions you may have.
- Read the campus policies related to the web site including Responsible Use of Information Technology, the
World Wide Web Site Policy, and Web Publishing Guidelines, and refer back to them as you develop your web pages.
- Your department head must designate an information provider (IP) from your department's professional staff who
will develop and coordinate departmental content on the web. The Information Provider's Agreement details the
responsibilities of the IP. You must complete the form and submit it to the Webteam.
- The IP needs to be familiar with web authoring tools like FrontPage and be able to edit web documents.
Check into training sessions offered by Information Services, CART, review available web resources for developers,
or try getting a good book on web page design.
Process
- Once the department/organization has named an IP, Webteam will create a
departmental directory on the test server where the IP can develop and test
departmental web pages.
- To access this directory (Windows users):
- From your desktop, right-click on My Computer and choose Map Network Drive;
- Select a drive letter (T: is recommended--stands for 'Test' server, as it's referred to by the Web Team).
- Select a path by typing \\webserv\sharename (you should
have received the sharename from the Web Team when your account is setup).
- Click OK or Finish.
- The IP should select a method to create web documents. The supported HTML editor for Windows machines is FrontPage.
- The IP develops web documents on the test web server.
- To test the links and path names, these documents can be accessed from on-campus
machines using the URL (address) http://testwww.bridgew.edu//dirname/filename.cfm,
where dirname is the departmental directory, e.g. History, and filename.ext
is the name of the file followed by its three character extension, e.g. index.cfm.
For example:
http://testwww.bridgew.edu/History/ to access
the file index.cfm in the departmental directory History
- Once the pages have been developed and reviewed within the department, and
are ready to be linked from the BSC home page, the IP notifies the webteam.
- The IP then must request the edited pages be moved to the BSC production
web server. The IP should notify the webteam via e-mail (webteam@bridgew.edu)
with the full url of their edited pages.
- The webteam determines where links will be provided to the departmental
lead page, e.g. under Academics vs. Information & Technology, establishes
the links, and copies the completed pages to the production web server. The
pages are then accessible to the world.
Site Maintenance
- The IP maintains web content in the departmental directory in a timely fashion and tests all changes made to pages.
- The IP e-mails the webteam with specific files that have been changed and the webteam moves these files to the production web server.
Student Organizations and Clubs
Student clubs and organizations wishing to have a web presence should contact
the Office of Student Involvment
and Leaderhip for information on creating and maintaining web pages.
